43. Retinal vein occlusion: What is evidence based?
Nicolas Feltgen (Göttingen)
Retinal vein occlusion is a common cause of visual loss. Depending on the duration, location and extent of the disease, symptoms may vary from very discrete impairments to complete loss of sight. Although many studies have been published over the last decades the therapeutical success rate is still unsatisfying. One of the major problems in analysing the published data is the small number of patients in the single study and the inconsistent inclusion criteria.
To date the results of intravitreal injection of corticosteroids and vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors appear encouraging in treatment of macular oedema secondary to retinal vein occlusion.
Those therapies will be compared to surgical and systemic interventions and to the natural course.
