12th Vitreoretinal Symposium Frankfurt – Marburg 2009

Scientific programm: Abstract

1st scientific session: Interface Macular Hole

4. Lamellar Macular Hole – Clinical Spectral OCT Correlations

Jerzy Nawrocki, Z. Michalewska, D. Odrobina, J. Michalewski (Lodz)

Authors present current knowledge about lamellar macular holes ( LMH) and pseudoholes (PH) and compare them with spectral OCT data. Spectral OCT data show that epiretinal membranes are present in all cases. During the follow-up PH may change its appearance to LMH. It is also possible to observe PH and LMH appearance in two different B-scans of the same eye. This allows to suggest that both diseases are subtype of epiretinal membrane formation. Why epiretinal membrane does not cover the fovea? Authors show that vitreoretinal traction to the fovea region preceeds LMH formation. This may produce internal limiting membrane (ILM ) rhexis in the fovea which prevents epiretinal membrane grow on the fovea. This theory is additionally confirmed by good surgical results after ppV with epiretinal membrane and ILM removal without any tamponade.
