Visualizing the Vitreoretinal Interface:
Is the Vitreous Attached or Detached?
Stefan Mennel (Marburg)Vitreoretinal adhesion and/or vitreoretinal traction can be associated with several vitreoretinal pathologies: i.e. macular hole, vitreomacular traction syndrome, diabetic macular edema and diabetic retinopathy. In case of macular edema secondary to central retinal vein occlusion or branch retinal vein occlusion and exudative age related macular degeneration several studies highlight this association.
Vitreoretinal adhesion and vitreoretinal traction can be examined by funduscopy (expert opinion), ultrasound, optical coherence tomography and high resolution OCT. In a prospective study we performed these examinations prior to vitrectomy and used intravitreal triamcinolone to visualize the vitreous intraoperatively. The results were compared and the predictability of each examination to demonstrate whether the vitreous in attached or not will be presented.
