WEB DESIGN AND PREFERENCES AND TRENDS (PAT) SURVEY

How to design a Webpage in 20 min

Peter Reed Pavan (Tampa)

Constructing a website using software packages such as Microsoft Frontpage is easy for anyone familiar with today’s word processors. There is considerable cost savings over hiring a professional. Updates can be made quickly. It is a creative and fun activity.

The site promoting your practice should be direct and simple. Start by selecting a directory on your personal computer where you can save your webpages. Then create the initial, home, or index page with Frontpage. This can be done by using the dropdown menus and toolbars. Your web pages should have a quick download time over a phone modem. Avoid large or many image files which may cause the page to ”hang“, and a potential
patient to lose interest. Use large dark print so visually impaired visitors can read your messages. The title of your page should state the name of your practice. Follow by inserting a jpg image of yourself. Give your current
position, contact information, and brief curriculum vitae. State the diseases you treat and procedures you perform. Provide links to other pages which give driving directions to your office, a map showing your office location, online articles you have published, and pages with information about the more common diseases you encounter in your practice. The latter may be your creations or you may link to patient information pages on The Vitreous Society web site. Provide a link so your patients can email you directly from your homepage.

To attract business you will want search engines to list the diseases you treat and procedures you perform in their database as well as your location. This can be done using meta tags at the beginning of your homepage.
Having created your website, you can publish it using Frontpage or an FTP program. Many internet service providers allot space for websites to subscribers at no extra charge. To learn more about ways to create and
maintain a website, simply search the world wide web for ”web sites“.
